Andre Onana is expected to go back to Trabzonspor for another back to back season. News has it that Manchester United are close to finalising a new loan contract for the goalkeeper. It has not yet been confirmed officially yet.
Last season, Onana was able to play 33 games for Trabzonspor and he was able to help the team to win the Turkish league Cup, beating Konyaspor 2 to 1 in the final match. After a season like that, it’s easy to understand why the Turkish club wants the goalkeeper back.
Why United Are Letting Him Go Again
At PamPredict, we’ve seen this one building for a while, and the reason is simple. Senne Lammens is now United’s clear number one and most important goalkeeper.
Onana’s team was reportedly told back in the month of May that even if he returned to Manchester, he still wouldn’t have the chance to play as the teams first goalkeeper. Once that was clear, this second loan became the most likely outcome.
No Buy Option, and Wages Split Differently This Time
Like the previous season, this deal reportedly excluded an option for the Trabzonspor to buy him to their club permanently. This means that Manchester United will still keep ownership of his contract once the loan ends, without having to receive any transfer fee.
There is a change that is worth noting, though. Last season, Trabzonspor paid all of Onana salary. This time, reports have it that the team will only pay part of his salary, and the salary is around £120,000 every week, leaving United to pay the rest of his salary. It’s a slight change in deals but an important difference between the two deals.
His Contract at Manchester United
Goalkeeper Onana joined Manchester United from Inter Milan in the month of July and in the year 2023 for £47.2 million. His contract runs all through till 2028. This gives the club some time before having to make their final decision on the player’s contract, but the same situation could actually surface again the coming summer. A highly experienced goalkeeper on a major contract, with no permanent buyer coming for him yet.
What Happens Next
Being wanted back after winning a trophy places high value on the player and it says a lot about how much Trabzonspor has rated him. ForManchester United, though, this might look more like a short-term solution than a real fix to the main issue. The wage question is still there, it simply gets pushed forward to yet another year.
We’ll be keeping an eye on this story as it goes on. Once the move on the goalkeeper is officially confirmed, expect more details on the exact terms. Possibly fresh interest from other clubs if Onana keeps performing his best while playing in the Turkey league.
